In public health, understanding and respecting diverse cultures is essential. Explore my commitment to cultural competency and how it shapes my approach to promoting community well-being.
To me, cultural competency means the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures. It involves recognizing and respecting the unique beliefs, values, and practices of different communities. This is crucial because public health initiatives must be tailored to the specific needs and contexts of the populations they serve. Without cultural competency, interventions can be ineffective, or worse, cause harm by overlooking cultural sensitivities and existing social structures. It ensures that health promotion and disease prevention strategies are inclusive, relevant, and equitable for everyone.

My journey of continuous learning
I plan to continue developing my cultural competency throughout my public health career by actively seeking out diverse experiences and learning opportunities. As I work on my reports I am hoping to stay educated on what cultures have more severity within health disparities. This includes engaging in community-based while participating in research with various ethnic and cultural groups, attending workshops and seminars on cultural sensitivity and health equity, and staying informed about global health trends and cultural determinants of health. I also intend to learn foundational phrases and greetings in languages common in the communities I serve, as a sign of respect and to facilitate initial communication. My goal is to foster genuine partnerships with communities, ensuring that my public health efforts are always guided by their unique perspectives and needs.
Cultural competency in public health refers to the ability of public health professionals and organizations to effectively understand, communicate with, and serve people across diverse cultural backgrounds. It goes beyond simply being aware of cultural differences—it involves actively adapting health programs, policies, and services to meet the social, cultural, linguistic, and behavioral needs of different populations. I have been able to apply the in my current internship as it is very diverse, however these artifacts show some glimpses of how different cultures have different levels of health disparities.
